Too Hot to Play?

 

Now that we are in the middle of the dog days of summer it is time to discuss summer exercise safety.  Very hot, humid weather may lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  While enjoying outside activity in extreme heat, one can lose significant amounts of sweat.  Sweating too much may lead to losing extensive fluid volume.  This can lead to body temperatures to rise and in extreme conditions allow for brain and heart damage.  This could be in the form of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

If you or a playing partner suddenly develops any of these symptoms, act immediately.  Get into the shade, pour cool water over the body especially covering the back of the neck and armpits, and drink water.  Do not hesitate to call for medical attention if the symptoms persist or get worse after a few minutes.  Play it smart this summer by following these helpful hydration tips.
